Reducing Lake Pollution

When living on a lake, it is crucial to do your part to keep the watershed clean and healthy.  Below are some easy steps you can take to keep Lake Gerry clean and the wildlife healthy.

Eliminate Run-off Pollutants:

  • Oil, Gasoline
  • Pesticides
  • Herbicides
  • Fertilizers
  • Cleaning Chemicals
  • Septic Waste

Run-off can be reduced by properly disposing of these chemicals, not leaving them out on your property or on driveways.  Properly applying them during the appropriate weather conditions when needed.  And reducing your need to use these chemicals, or whenever possible, utilizing a eco-friendly version of cleaning products.

Watch for the Chenango County hazardous waste disposal dates.

When picking cleaning products including:  Dish Soap, Laundry Detergent and even hand and body wash, try to choose products that do not contain phosphates.  Phosphates end up in the lake and promote algae and plant growth.
